Golf Professional at The Salt Pond Course
Arthur K. Whaley (“Art”), PGA Golf Professional at the Salt Pond Golf Course, was inducted in the Eastern Shore Golf Hall of Fame in 2012. For more than thirty years, Art Whaley has contributed to the growth and success of the golf industry on the Eastern Shore as a player, PGA Professional, and golf instructor.
Pro Golfer
Art has been playing golf since he hit his first golf ball at eight, playing at the Ocean City Golf and Yacht Club. His first championship, the prestigious Delaware State Junior Championship, was won in 1971. In high school, Art won the Delaware High School State Championship and earned a full golf scholarship to East Tennessee State. In 1978, Art won the Delaware State Open Championship.
Art started his professional career in 1985 as an Assistant Professional at Link Hills Country in Tennessee. While there he won the Tennessee State Pro-Junior Tournament Team Event Winner and later the same year was the Tennessee State Assistant Championship Winner. He won Tennessee State Assistant Championship tournaments in 1986 and 1987 and won the Memphis True Temper Classic tournaments in 1991 and 1995. In 1996 and 1997, he was the Tennessee PGA Section Champion.
Golf Instructor
In 2000, Art returned to Delaware and was hired as the Golf Pro at the Salt Pond Golf Course.
In January 2008, the Salt Pond Homeowners Association purchased the golf course. Art to continued as the golf pro and was a critical participant in the transition. His knowledge helped guide the new Board of Directors to understand the business the homeowners had bought.
Art continues to build the course as a desired destination for golfers looking to play at a reasonable price without taking the day from other activities.
